64 psychological triggers for social media

How to write videos that don’t lose people after the hook.

Once your hook gets someone's attention, the rest of the video needs to reward it. A viewer might recognize a familiar frustration, learn something unexpected, or want to find out how a story ends.

Psychological triggers can help you get that first moment of attention and keep it as you explain an idea, build trust, or encourage someone to act. Start with 3 to 5 that work together.

Some of the 64 triggers here are well-studied psychological effects. Others are storytelling and copywriting techniques. What works will depend on your audience; no technique guarantees a response.

How to use this guide: read the sections in order or jump to the one you need. Tap any trigger or example to open it and see how it works in a real script, then finish with the final script check before you publish.

01

Make people stop scrolling

02

Keep people watching

03

Make people care

People pay more attention when they can see how a topic relates to their lives.

04

Make people trust you

05

Influence how people make decisions

Use these when discussing buying decisions, prices, products, and services.

06

How to use 3 to 5 triggers in one script

Give the rest of the video as much thought as the hook. Once someone stops scrolling, each section needs to give them a reason to stay.

Script sectionWhat it needs to doTriggers to consider
HookMake people stopContradiction, comparison, unexpectedness
ContextMake them careEmpathy, familiarity, authority
DevelopmentMake your point clearAnalogy, proof, storytelling
RehookGive them another reason to watchMisdirection, open loop, surprise
PayoffGive them what they came forSpecific details, clear answer, result

One line can do more than one of these jobs, so you don't need five separate sentences.

Trigger combinations to try

The final script check

Before publishing, ask yourself:

  • Does the first sentence give someone a reason to stop scrolling?
  • Does the viewer immediately understand why the topic matters to them?
  • Is there a reason to keep watching after the first few seconds?
  • Have I included something unexpected, useful, or hard to forget?
  • Do I support my claims with examples, details, or evidence?
  • Does the ending deliver what the hook promised?

Five triggers used naturally can work better than ten squeezed into a 30-second script. Sometimes two are enough. Choose the ones that help viewers follow your idea and want to hear the rest. If the script feels like it's pushing them through a sales funnel, simplify it.
